Regina Bellatrix's comments: This is a pleasant little fic wherein Horatio makes friends with the enemy and learns that nice people can do terrible things in times of war.
The story makes use of shifting first person point of view between Horatio and the Frenchman who fishes him out of the water after he is knocked overboard during a battle. Shifting POV has become something of a fad these days, and as with all fads it can either be done to great effect or to the detriment of the tale. This is neither spectacularily one or the other, wobbling instead on the fence between the two, so if you have a particular aversion to shifting POV, you may wish to steer clear of it.
It is a simple tale of two men in a boat, depending only on each other, sharing stories of happier days. Horatio gets the chance to unburden himself of the doubts and angst he carried from both his dealings with Simpson and the fiasco at Muzillac. When they are rescued by the Indi, and Horatio learns some things about his new friend that he would rather not have known, we are treated to some tasty little hurt/comfort scenes between Horatio and Archie.
